About the Role
As a Locator Technician, you will be responsible for the accurate identification and marking of underground utilities using electromagnetic (EMF) and ground penetrating radar (GPR) equipment. You’ll help prevent damage to critical infrastructure and ensure the safety and success of civil and construction projects across NSW.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct utility locating services using EMF and GPR equipment
Read, interpret, and validate BYDA (Before You Dig) plans
Mark and map underground assets (e.g., power, comms, water, sewer, gas)
Operate locating equipment safely and maintain calibration logs
Produce clear, accurate reports, drawings, and field notes
Communicate effectively with site managers, engineers, and clients
Ensure work is performed in accordance with safety regulations and Australian Standards (AS5488)
Required Skills & Qualifications
Minimum 1–2 years’ experience in utility locating
Proficient in using RD8100, Mala GPR, or similar locating equipment
Valid White Card (Construction Induction)
Current Australian driver’s licence (manual preferred)
Ability to read and interpret utility plans and CAD/GIS files
Physically fit and willing to work outdoors in varying conditions
Excellent communication, attention to detail, and teamwork skills
Highly Regarded (but not essential)
NULCA Accreditation or Telstra/Optus accreditation
GPR experience or Ground Disturbance Level 2
Traffic Control certification
First Aid certification
Experience with GIS data collection tools (Trimble, ESRI, etc.)
